"Stoves" members:
Mauro had a note on a different list. After asking him about his
interest, he sent the following message which I hope someone on the
stoves list can add to. To the best of my recollection, we have had
noone talk on this list about stove renovation.
Mauro:
I do not recall ever seeing the term "smoke-spiral". Could you
describe your meaning a little. Also. would you describe the term
"majolica". You haven't quite asked our group a question - but I suppose
that you are asking about the best ways to achieve renovation. In fact,
now I wonder if it might be better to sometimes improve antique stove
performance. I hope that you will now add more specific questions and
will share your experiences on what makes for a better stove. I hope
that you don't mind my sending your letter on to the full group.

Dear Mr.Larson,
Thank you for your warm welcome.
I live at the edge of the former Austro-Ungarian Emperor, nowadays northeast
      Italy,
I have always appreciated the fine workmanship to make antique wood stove.
Old tradition of my land, since the 11th century.
Now as connoisseur and antique dealer, I pay my attention to the art of
restoration of ancient majolica wood stove. This involves not only the
technique of "cold" restoration, but also rebuilding the interior, sometime
complex, to make the best of the hot smoke, warming all the inside / outside
      stove's wall.
The internal "smoke-spiral" was always different, depends of size, form or
      type of wood feed.
Maybe this mailing list is not the right site to share this experience, and
I was going to wait few messages, to understand better the spirit of it.
      Your message has given to me the opportunity to show my field of interest;
if this is far from the subject, please let me know.
Yours faithfully.

Mauro Grusovin.

In Austria, there is a ceramic stove builders' guild. They have quite a few
      publications available (in German):
Osterrichischer Kachelofenverband
      A-1100 WIEN, Paltramplatz 7
You can also do a websearch for "Kachelofen"

Greetings!
Andrew Waegel here from CREST, the folks 'behind the scenes' of these
      mailing lists.
I'm passing on a request from our friends at Crest Graphics, owners of the
'crest.com' domain, which has received numerous messages from folks
attemting to communicate with these lists, which are of course serviced by
      the 'crest.org'.
The request is, simply, to mind the email addresses of these lists when
sending messages or telling others about the lists - remember to use
      'crest.org', not 'crest.com'.
This will help to minimize any further confusion.
Thanks very much, and apologies for the intrusion.
Best Regards,

Dear Stovers:
I hope you saw this article in the recent issue of BUN-INDIA copied to the
bioenergy list. It can be found at http://144.16.73.100/~mukunda/home.html
Has anyone used one? How does the performance compare to other stoves?

      ===============
      SWOSTHEE
Single Pan Wood Stove Of High efficiency A Fuel Efficient
      Portable Cookstove,
      Svathi Bhogle
Swosthee is a portable metallic single pan stove designed at
the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. It has a heat
utilisation efficiency of 32 % which is the highest among
all single pan stoves in India today. Even by a conservative
estimate, usage of high efficiency stoves like Swosthee can
conserve 84 million tonnes of firewood annually in India
alone. Some other salient features of the stove are:
o It is a multifuel stove capable of burning a variety of biomass like
firewood, coconut shells, cowdung cakes, twigs and briquetted
      agricultural residue.
o Reduced emissions (CO - less than 20 PPM at the operator level and
Suspended Particulate Matter in the range of 1.0- 1.5 mg/m3). A power
      input of 3.5 kW.
      o Easy ignition and maintenance.
o Versatility -The stove can be used with vessels of all sizes
and shapes and is suitable for cooking all types of common
      dishes.
The Swosthee stove is designed by a team of scient-
ific workers who do not use firewood burning stove as a part
of their daily routine. Their objective was to design astove
with a maximum heat utilisation efficiency, minimum release
of hazardous emissions and as user friendly as could be per-
ceived by them. A survey was therefore carried out among
rural, semi-rural and urban households to obtain first hand
information on stove usage, cooking practices and user
response to Swosthee stoves.A near unanimous conclusion from
the survey was that the Swosthee stove saves fuel and time
and also emits significantly less smoke than traditional
stoves. All types of users found the stove to be sturdy,
stable and easy to ignite and maintain. Other inferences that
can be drawn from the survey are:
The Swosthee stove is ideal for a family size of 5-6
      members.
The Swosthee stove is especially suited for houses having
roofs made of reinforced concrete, asbestos or other sheets
      and thatch.
The Swosthee stove has a high acceptability among househo-
lds living in urban slums where the size of the house is
      small.
The survey also categorically confirmed that the two most
important attributes that a potential user is looking for in
a cooking device is a reduction in the cooking time and a
saving in the fuel bill. Swosthee stoves will meet the cook-
ing requirements of a variety of users not only in India but
elsewherein the world as well besides reducing deforestation
      and emission of hazardous emissions.

I have been out of circulation for many months with more work than time, and
even now my message does not contribute anything, but only makes some
      general requests...
Firstly, I am looking for somewhere to do an internship (as part of my
course) somewhere in the energy planning/policy/management arena for two
months or longer. I am particularly interested in working in the future in
an (international?) engineering/environmental consultancy so something which
would contribute to this aim would be excellent. Can anyone give me some
leads to follow? Any contacts in the US?
Secondly, I have a friend from the Czech Republic who would like to do some
volunteer work over the summer break in a developing country. She is from a
scientific background with an MSc and (by then) a Masters in Environmental
Management. Does anyone know of any projects she could work on? Perhaps in
      Africa or South America?
My thoughts about stoves are currently on hold! But, be assured, this is
      only a temporary situation...
All the best to one and all
