Has an analysis of the biochar from old terra preta soils shown any change in fixed carbon from that which you would expect from low temperature pyrolysis? Apart from wondering what contribution the remaining volatile compounds might make I wonder how they survive for thousands of years compared with the amorphous carbon in char. AJH
