Do something small.
In the middle of a paddock of switchgrass, mow a patch, say 10m square.
On half of it spread some finely ground charcoal. Run your backhoe over
it, dragging the teeth of the bucket over the ground, as a sort of
tiller. Do the whole patch, back and forth, side to side.
Do another 10m square, same way, but this time also spread some sugar
over the entire area, or perhaps over half the area, at right angles to
the direction of the charcoal. This will give you 4 squares, one
untreated, one with sugar only, one charcoal only, one charcoal with sugar.
Mark the areas with fence pegs of some sort, so you can find them later.
Let it grow and check the results at the end of the growing season.
Monitor it for the next couple of seasons.

The grass shouldn't be worried by the bit of scarification.

Small enough?

Kurt
who is doing something like that with a couple of garden beds.
