Dear Jeff
When an Ant colony is attacked, they give off a cloud of formic acid
vapor, to repel the attackers. Acetic acid "vinegar" is similar in smell
to formic acid.
Intuitively, there is a good reason to believe that vinegar from
charcoaling could repel insects and varmints.
