[Terrapreta] "How do I do it?"

Lou,

We need Gilberto Gil to add some music to the promotion of terra preta. I'm
sure there must be a "Samba da terra preta". There is probably a ritual
"quadrille" devoted to the practice.

The Drupal software that we run the terra preta site on is open source. I
sponsor the labor and server costs. The software is pretty flexible. There
are probably modules that could link to various forms of networking .

Hey Tom and ALL,

Invitation sent over at EcoWorld.

Aha, now I understand the reason for the listserv approach. Yes, low
bandwidth is a limitation that I also face as I travel in Brazil. So, I blog
and chat and skype only when I can. But, there's no reason not to have a
multi-level approach. Maybe we should start developing some parallel
networking tools?

I'm very connected with the open source, free software, digital inclusion
movement, here in Brazil. It's been pioneered by the Federal Ministry of
Culture under the leadership of Gilberto Gil. Maybe there can be some good
connections to the terra preta movement which, quite naturally, will
flourish best in an open source environment.

Please let me your ideas for new levels of networking and I'll try to
connect them to those who know much more than I do about the possibilities
of Internet2 and more.

All best,

lou

Lou,

Just invite folks to the terra preta list. Everyone is exploring. The
collective discussion of fundamentals is healthy. We don't have experts
here on all the topics.

As various tools become available discussion will evolve on them. But we
have to be aware of the limitations of the audiences. For example, some of
the newer social networking tools require high bandwidth. This discussion
runs on a simple listserv instead of the web because that is the easiest for
people dialing in with low bandwidth to communicate. Many of the people who
should benefit from Terra Preta have little or no bandwidth.

Our purpose is to explore and spread the application of the technology. The
only way to do that is to put charcoal in the pot or in the ground.

Thanks for your vigorous activity and enthusiasm for terra preta.

Tom,

There's a request (below) over in the thread at EcoWorld

It says,

After reading this post, I became really interested in applying this
technology (if I may say) to a patch of cropfield at my house located in a
mountainous area. Is there any way I can try it at home?

btw, the discussion is also very interesting and engaging. I have a lot of
questions popping up as I read each post, and I'll post them soon.

Do you want to jump in? Or, should I invite him ove to here? Or what?

I think it would be great if we can help people get involved. They will
generate important on-the-ground stories and information. I believe that
might awhile to get the formal science
on terra preta but very important anecdotal information can start right away
and play a
good role in the overall process.

I often feel that I need to apologize for the fact I emerged from a hardcore
wilderness defender
background and that I'm really stupid about the role of humans in nature.
But intuitively I suspect that we could build a network of terra preta
farmers/gardeners/growers. I think that the conversation would be generative
and that something would be created out of it. Does anyone here know about
social networking? Should some sort of terra preta community be created on
orkut or facebook
or.....? What do ya think?

Hi Folks,

I'm starting to get email requests from people saying "How do I do it?"

The "it" is terra preta and the people seem to be non-scientists with
gardens or small plots. Is there a good thread or link to send them to?
I sense that there are a lot of people who would love to get their
hands dirty with terra preta.

Thanks,

lou
