Hi Edward,
You said ... BET 650-1200 m2/g, while TP is mild with specific surface area BET 25-100 m2/g, ...
What does "specific surface area BET" mean? What primarily effects this factor in produced charcoal? (is it temperature?) Is there any indication that the size of the individual pores is different, in the samples of BET 650-1200 m2/g vs BET 25-100 m2/g charcoal? Does this relative "porosity size" have differing effects on use of the charcoal by soil biota and/or change the water holding capacity of the char? Are there other possible descriptions of or reasons for the differences between "activated charcoal" vs Terra Preta style (biochar applicable for soil amendments)? Does not the temperature affect the "volatile matter" content also, and does this say anything about the volatile matter content of TP charcoal. Can mild specific surface area BET 25-100 m2/g charcoal have low VM%? Does low VM% matter in TP use charcoal?
Regards,
SKB

Dear Gerrit
Thanx for this interesting paper.
TECHNICAL NOTICE:
Activated charcoal (from gas mask 300 mesh about 50 micron) is very much different than TP.
Activated charcoal is an aggressive - powerful absorbent with specific surface area BET 650-1200 m2/g, while TP is mild with specific surface area BET 25-100 m2/g, As far as I know CALCON Carbon tried to put in activated carbon to soil since long time, but was not successful.
