Beware about purchasing terra preta on line. It has most likely been  
sterilized before shipping. There are quarantine issues when  
importing soil. For example, Sudden Oak Disease this new multiple  
host parasite caused by Phytopthera ramorum  In Europe and North  
America is thought to been initially imported on ornamental plants  
cultivated in the moist tropics.

If you happen to be in Brazil and are tempted to put a sample of  
terra preta in your luggage you may become responsible for  
introducing a previously unknown soil borne disease like P. ramorum  
that is now threatening our native populations of some oak species,  
coast redwood, douglas fir and big leaf maple. The threat as  
illustrated by the sudden oak disease epidemic now is that a  
insignificant parasite can find new hosts, genetically adapt and wipe  
out an element of a flora or an agricultural  crop.
