New Green Machine

A machine designed by Indiana scientists for the U.S. military enables soldiers to convert food, paper, wood and plastic trash into electricity. That the "tactical biorefinery" is mobile and able to burn multiple fuels at once makes it a shoo-in for civilian use. The size of a small moving van, it produces 90 percent more energy than it consumes. It initially runs on diesel oil until its gasifier and bioreactor begin to produce fuel, which, unlike petroleum, is carbon-neutral, emitting almost no carbon dioxide.
