[Terrapreta] Does Charcoal help soil hold water?

Does anyone have any information or research on the water-holding capacities
of charcoal?
Some say it increases water holding capacity by 17%

Others say activated charcoal is better at holding water
is there any reasonably definitive studies?

It is especially important in Oz because of the very severe drought.

Recent research on water holding polymers and corn 'starch' has been very
damming.
They don't seem to be much good at all in field conditions.

I would appreciate any help muchly.

Thanks
