N need to worry about e. coli in urine.  During the war years, surgeons used it to sterilize their insturments, if boiling water was impossible.

I do not think the disease potential in the use of human wastes (most especially feces) should be downplayed too much.  E-coli does and has killed people recently.  Cholera is one of the most deadly and infectious diseases still today.  Both are directly related to and vectored by human wastes.  Using human wastes as fertilizer for food crops is definitely not as simple as we can all shit and piss in buckets and then throw it on our vegetable gardens!
 
Nonetheless, the humanure wastes and animal wastes can be utilized as fertilizers, but the safe handling and processing of these materials is absolutely required before it can be distributed willy-nilly on fields ... even if they are not growing food crops.  No one wants to get explosive diarrhea from taking a walk in the woods, park, or a cotton field, right?!  And then there is the "Mary"-like stink?!

The ABC TV garden show recommends urine for all citrus.

My Dad and I used to always go out at night and help along the corn. A nice father/son thing to do.:)

In the Australian gold fields in the 1840-50's the Chinese were paid to take away the "Night soil" as no one else would touch it. 
Of course they then used it on the veggie gardens and sold the scarce veggies back to the thousands of prospectors, making a tidy profit both from the sanitation services and the vegetables.:)

Yes we do have strange idea about bodily wastes. 

One final story, the local Council makes (made?) a fantastic compost from sewerage waste and seaweed. Tthey called it "Mary" mix after an especially smelly council employee.:)
I talked to the engineer about getting some and he said he'd love to sell/give me some but there were too many insurance problems in case I contracted the plague or whatever.
