Hi Dave (codesuidae), Harmon,
If the nuts are too bitter to eat and most are, then maybe the nuts could be made into charcoal and bio-energy. At least it would be a renewable crop. One would not have to wait 30 years to harvest the wood to make into charcoal.

Including the oaks that the tribes in California cultivated for food.
They all evidently require leeching to remove the tannins, but no
mention is made of lost nutrients. No doubt some are lost, but clearly
the nuts still have sufficient dietary value.
