Thanks to SKB for the informative post on fertilizers.

Another bad practice, at least for cane land, is to use drip irrigation 
without interspersing flood ever third or fourth year. The lower volume of water 
with uninterrupted drip allows for the accumulation of salts in the lower part 
of the cane plant's root system.
