There is "no draft" up or down inside the retort that Folke uses.  Gases generated by heating the wood inside the inner barrel may be driven out by internal pressure, but there is no flow of air in and out of that inner barrel.  THere are no holes in it to let air in even, let alone any forcing of air or oxidant through it.

Does this make sense?
