[Terrapreta] Global Warming arguments

Philip,

Good suggestions. Thanks.

We can experiment with topic filtering. We haven't used that feature before.
You all can suggest topic areas. Short terms are preferred. I'll be
interested to see how long it take people to learn how to select topics.

Separate lists are little more cumbersome in that they require another two
moderators for each new list. Moderators remove half a dozen SPAM posts each
day in addition to helping people with subscribing/unsubscribing and
posting. We also find that there is excessive cross posting when we create
separate lists. People can't seem to resist "sharing" their posts with
everyone on every list even if they are way off topic. So we're constantly
reminding people to stop cross posting.

Another tool we have is to put the climate change discussion on a web forum.
We can do that on the Terra Preta website which we run on Drupal. It appears
that people most interested in the climate change discussion have sufficient
bandwidth for a web forum.

Tom

Question, can these objectives be accomplished by adding key words to the
subject line or do we need totally separate lists?

We wouldn't need totally separate lists, but separate lists would be far
simpler for Tom, as well as for us as users.

Personally, I don't think we need to change. I am fine with the fire hose,
I read every word that I am interested in, and sample the rest with my
peripheral vision.

FYI, to do the "keywords in the subject" approach with the list software,
Mailman version 2.1.9.cp2, Tom, as list admin, can enable the "Topics
Filter". Tom then defines several topics with 'names' and 'regular
expressions' to match against Subject:. Then each member who is interested
in topic filtering can 'subscribe' to one or more topics of interest and,
separately, choose to receive or not receive those messages that do not
match a topic.

Once Tom enabled and defined some topics, you would see the following on
your user options page
(http://bioenergylists.org/mailman/options/terrapreta_bioenergylists.org/[yo
uremailaddress]
youremailaddress%5D> )

Which topic categories would you like to subscribe to?

By selecting one or more topics, you can filter the traffic on the mailing
list, so as to receive only a subset of the messages. If a message matches
one of your selected topics, then you will get the message, otherwise you
will not.

If a message does not match any topic, the delivery rule depends on the
setting of the option below. If you do not select any topics of interest,
you will get all the messages sent to the mailing list.

<Insert new text here>
Do you want to receive messages that do not match any topic filter?

This option only takes effect if you've subscribed to at least one topic
above. It describes what the default delivery rule is for messages that
don't match any topic filter. Selecting No says that if the message does not
match any topic filters, then you won't get the message, while selecting Yes
says to deliver such non-matching messages to you.

If no topics of interest are selected above, then you will receive every
message sent to the mailing list.

Note that this feature only works with regular delivery, not digest
delivery.

The body of the message can also be optionally scanned for keywords. This
is something else Tom could enable, and he would set how many lines of the
body will be scanned, for example the first 5 lines.
