Greg,

Here's a small-scale Japanese horizontal DIY model with very  
extensive fabrication instructions and photos:    "Iwasaki's high  
speed charcoal maker type　IM-4SA."

  It might be too dirty for your urban environment. But it is sort of  
hidden since it does get covered in dirt as insulation.  And it might  
be possible to clean up the exhaust by re-routing the exhaust gases  
back into the firebox...?

Has anybody on the list made one of these?
