[Estufas_bioenergylists.org] more briquette press options if you need them

Thanks Richard...

This is an interesting issue (being open source or self independent) that
deserves to be addressed properly, with time, case studies and evidences.
Your inputs are very interesting and the reasoning is also very lively
expressed.

Fernando,

Thanks for hte offer of the return mechanism but I am not personslly
intersted in actually using it.

As to open sourcing all information, I would suggest that at the conceptual
level, this is a great idea. Once one has put their own effort in to their
own design however --and they are depending upon earning their living off of
this work, (as opposed to being funded by an external source, ie., donor
university, institution etc) I think that the ballgame has to change a bit.

While we will be happy to provide the reader with initial information about
another
's press we would want to make sure that other person is agreeable to
sharing their own information. I know several who are operating on the basis
of sales of such in their own area.
For our part, we will help out with general information where we can.

We decidedly not patent anything but we do ask that for our own materials,
one cover the cost of their preparation. Most on the list who are relying
upon their base income from the activity, do the same thing either through
sales of booklets or full books or the hardware itself...
Where, in the case of the presses, we often have an unspoken but none the
less, privleged access to another colleague's or group's information, we
are happy to share the awareness of it but for technical details we are
honor bound to refer the reader to that person or group for their own
reactions and communication. Where we either give out or sell the
information (about 50% of our inquiries are freely supported) we ask that
the user becme the teacher. They pay us back many imes over by feeding back
to us their experiences and recommendations. We can then play this forward
with reference to them fo rhte next inquiry. It is somewherebetween a
socalist subdicdised model and the capitalist hoarding for survivial model.

To me with wht little exposure I have , the business of trying to remain
"open sourced" and yet self sustaining in ones own economic activity has yet
to be defined. I feel that most all of us on this very list have not really
dealt with developing some fundamentals or guiedlines all the while Yet as I
mention this, no one seems to be unhappy.. A question asked too soon is a
fool's playground ?

The capitalist or socialist models for "ownership of information: both, to
my mind fail miserably in offering a way forward. The former shortchanges
the free excahnge of ideas while the latter assures no incentive for the
entrepreneur..Neither model assures us of reaching the maximum number of
people with the maz ximum information. Seems that we need a new model for an
ethically equitable foundation in this new age.... I have thought of the
term "co venting" (shared brains but pre-determined separate markets) but
that is too simplistic...
At the same time 20 years in the development game have shown me that Donor
and NGOs alike generally distort a free market even if the technician is the
only one being paid in such as an enterprise development project ..
How to eat and do good at the same time...
Thoughts anybody ?
