Today's New York Times credits Malawi's bumper crop of corn to the use of
fertilizer through subsidies which had been discouraged by the World Bank
and aid agencies like USAID. See

As usual fertilizer is clearly only part of the story. How could terra preta
help rebuild Malawian soils and what approach can be taken to demonstrate
it?
Can USAID, World Bank and others be moved to take a more comprehensive
approach to building fertile soils in Africa?
