Diatom remains are made of silica. Different microstructure than  
biochar for sure but may offer habitat for bacteria. In nature diatoms  
are very common in freshwater and aquatic habitats, and some in a  
gelatinous matrix form visible structures and under microscope are  
very interesting structure that can be viewed here.
