How about this for a base price:  $215/ton as of 2003 or is it 1,600  
Euros/ton?

I can't believe the price spread between the charcoal producer and  
distributor...


The price of charcoal is dependant on the following factors:
• Moisture content of the charcoal
• Volatility
• Packaging
• Heating value
• Burning time

In 2003 the world average price of charcoal was $215 per ton. Ghana  
supplies the UK market at
$ 208 and the Netherlands at $337. One of the four companies which  
obtained a permit from the
Energy Commission to export charcoal in Ghana exports to the  
Netherlands and Germany
@€1,600 per ton FOB. Charcoal in the UK is averagely sold in retail  
bags of 3kg at £3.99.

One exporter in the Greater Accra Region disclosed that a 40 footer  
container contains about 672
bag of charcoal which weighs 26 metric tons. The average value of the  
container is €1,600 per
ton which amounts to £ 3.50 an equivalence of l 40,000 for the normal  
maxi bag of 40 kg. To be
competitive on the export market, the cost of a maxi bag of charcoal  
from the producer must not
exceed l25,000.The charcoal is shipped in the container to the buyer  
who is usually a distributor.
These distributors then repackage and sell them to retail outlets for  
the consumer.
