[Terrapreta] Economics of biochar

Hi all

Exscuse me but, ....some further thoughts on the economics of carbon
offsetting via biochar

There must already have been quite a few tonnes of biochar put into soils
around the world, as part of academic research into biochar / terra preta
over the last few years. Every one of those tonnes probably has unrealised
extra value in the form of potential sale as a carbon offset. Because the
cost of producing that biochar has already been funded and paid for, any
income from the sale of the carbon offset value would be "icing on the
cake", therefore the market price of this form of offsetting could be made
quite competitive versus other forms of offsetting. You could view this type
of sale of carbon offsets as a type of "loss leader" that could help open up
the market for subsequent sales possibly at higher prices later

One step in this direction would be to set up a website (or use an existing
one) where data on quantities and qualities of biochar being used for
research purposes were properly documented, in a form ready for sale as
offsets. Either to companies already in the business of marketing carbon
offsets. Or for sale directly to individuals wanting to offset their own
carbon emissions. This website could include some promotional info on the
special merits of biochar as a means of carbon of setting.
