I'm leaning that way myself.  One particular problem is that certain list 
members feel compelled to answer most, if not all, emails sent to the list. 
The second email in this thread is a prime example.

Also, many sent emails are very long, longer than their content would 
warrant.

Also, HTML emails are often ugly to read for those of us who stick to 
text-based email readers.

Finally, few if any people on this list seem to know about the standard way 
of quoting emails:  (a) using ">" symbols, (b) placing replies after the 
quoted text, (c) quoting a minimal amount of relevant, previously written 
text. See the section on "quoting" at http://www.iwillfollow.com/email.htm. 
(In fact, that whole document is quite good.)  Also see the text I quoted at 
the top of this email.

I joined this list a couple of weeks ago because I am intriguted by biochar 
and terra preta, but I've found the signal-to-noise ratio rather lower than 
I'd hoped, and as a result I haven't learnt much yet.
