Rick,

The Japanese project in Java was a CDM project.

You might find other examples at the UNFCCC site.

The International Energy Agency Bioenergy Task 38 on Greenhouse Gas Balances
of Biomass and Bioenergy Systems (Carbon Sequesration) may be another
source. Bernhard Schlamadinger Joanneum Research Austria has led that Task.
IEA Tasks are cooperative committees made up of representatives from
contributing countries that meet every six months. See:
http://www.ieabioenergy.com/Task.aspx?id=38

While not exactly carbon in soil he may know of projects that are related.
Their mext meeting is in Berlin May 11.

Subject: Re: [Terrapreta] Recycling pyrolysis smoke back into bio-char

Thanks to Tom Miles, Michael Bailes, Sean Barry and others for their
responses to me, re above

The background to my inquiry:...

I work in association with NGOs, bilateral and multilateral organisations
who are managing development aid programs (see www.mande.co.uk).

There is an emerging opportunity for poor rural communities in Africa and
Asia to participate in (official) carbon trading and (voluntary) carbon
offset markets, by selling carbon credits via intermediaries that can
aggregate and mediate supply and demand. Those carbon credits could arise
from a number of practices e.g. biofuel production, new growth forestry and
bio-char production. Ideally they should have locally beneficial effects
(e.g. increased soil fertility), as well as earn an "export" income

I am trying to interest a number of aid organisations that I am in contact
with in the potential of bio-char. But I need to be able to present useful
information. I am seeking the following types of information:
- effecient low tech ways of producing bio-char e.g solar energy or more
effecient uses of bio-mass as fuel for the pyrolysis process
- low tech processes that maximise the number of useful products that can be
used, in addition tobio-char for carbon credits e.g. smoke / liquid products
useful as fertiliser, and gasses or liquids that have fuel value
- information on risks, e.g. from handling the processes and products, or
mis-applying bio-char to soils with negative efects on fertility
- information on appropriate and inappropriate feedstock into the pyrolysis
process.

My apologies, I have since found another slide presentation at
http://www.eprida.com/hydro/ecoss/presentations/BIOENERGY/index_files/frame.
htm
<http://www.eprida.com/hydro/ecoss/presentations/BIOENERGY/index_files/frame
.htm> that refers to the same process (see slide 23).

But I have some questions re this slide, that someone may be able to help
with:
- is the research/study by C Steiner, M Garcia, W Forster and W Zech
available online anywhere?
- the slide refers to piopirol. Is this one and the same as somke from
pyrolysis or...?

Hi all

Can you help me find an online copy of a EPRIDA presentation by Dannie
Day that was available at
http://www.energy.gatech.edu/presentations/dday.pdf
<http://www.energy.gatech.edu/presentations/dday.pdf> until recently.
Slide 27 referred to the recycling volatile oils produced during
pyrolysis (in the smoke) back into the dry bio-char which results from
pyrolysis, to increase the nutrient value of the biochar to colonising
mycorrhizal fungi. The slide also referred to pirolenhoso.

I have tried fionding this webpage but it seems to have been withdrawn.
