Hi Erich,

Where did you hear or read about Terra Preta soils increasing CO2 emissions? Do you mean emissions from soil? Do these emissions of CO2 exceed the amount of charcoal that is sequestered in the soil by burying the charcoal?

Regards,

SKB

  Hi All,
  At least TP gets a final word on this Biopact Blog story on Dynamotive's 200 biomass tons / Day Bio-Oil pyrolsis operation, which is optimized for fuel not char. I recall when I first read of Dynamotive , a year or more ago, they didn't speak of char and soils at all.

   Dynamotive demonstrates fast-pyrolysis ;

  "In a very interesting side-development, Dynamotive also announced that it is experimenting with biochar ('agrichar', 'terra preta') which could lead to the production of carbon-negative fuels (more here<http://biopact.com/2007/05/carbon-negative-biofuels-dynamotive-to.html> and here<http://biopact.com/2007/06/carbon-negative-biofuels-and-biochar.html>). By storing a carbon-rich fraction of the pyrolysed biomass in agricultural soils, a low-tech carbon sequestration technique can be developed. The process has shown<http://biopact.com/2007/06/research-confirms-biochar-in-soils.html> to result in increased yields for the (energy) crops that are planted on such improved soils."

  P. S. I think Jon & Sean are contending around the complicated soil gas emissions questions about TP.
  My understanding is both TP and healthy organic soil increase CO2, but the over all GHG effects are lower because of less Methane and N2O emissions.
