to Bioenergy List from Lewis L Smith

Extrapolating from my experience with alfalfa, Napier grass and pine trees,
allow me to add another consideration to an already complicated problem !

We should distinguish between two situations > the care, preservation
and/or management of natural forests on one hand, and "tree farms" on the other.
The latter always have a management system and usually involved short
rotations, such coppicing willows.

Especially with short rotation crops, one must be careful that the energy
expended in implementing the management system does not wipe out any
environmental and/or energy gains from the additional acreage in trees, grass or whatever.
The outcome is not always intuitively obvious, so one should "play safe" and
"do ones homework", project by project. However, this is pretty much "par for
the course" with bioenergy.

Cordially.
