when i was checking out the catalyst article about BEST's steve joseph, i spotted another article about another concern of mine: water pollution. lots of attention is focused on air pollution -- acid rain and greenhouse gases. but beyond effects of isolated mountaintop forests and lakes, i see little discussion of the consequence for the oceans. this article interviews two scientists with the data about ocean acidification and marine ecosystem collapse, especially those fabled coral reefs.

i attach a one-page layout of this interview, or you can go to this link for the video and transcript:

four things of concern to terra preta researchers:

the primary acid-forming agent in the oceans is carbon dioxide our ever-present greenhouse gas.

soils, their micro-organisms and forests are the principal guardians of water quality. soil filters, purifies, moderates, and balances water quality and water flow discharges.

oceans are the other principal long-term carbon sink on the earth, through conversion into calcium carbonate shells and skeletons, including coral. ancient calcium carbonate converted into fossils is limestone, a primary soil amendment to raise soil pH and increase calcium supplies.

our best source of minerals & trace elements to replenish depleted soils and ecosystems is the seas.
