If
a) one gallon of diesel fuel produces 8.2 kg. CO2 (see Folke's
figures below)
b) the atomic weight of carbon is 12 and oxygen is 16,
Then, one kilogram of pure carbon is needed to sequester (44/12) 3.7
kg of CO2, OR (8.2/3.7) 2.2 kg. of pure carbon is required to
sequester all the CO2 produced in one gallon of diesel.

If
b) the cost of charcoal is $200/ton, or $.20/kg (we'll ignore the
cost of shipping, etc.)
c) since charcoal is 90% carbon, the actual pure carbon in one kg. of
charcoal is approx. 0.9 kg
Then one kg. of pure carbon from char costs approx. (.20 times 1/.9)
$0.220

Thus, at $200/ton of char, we would have to add about (2.2 times $.
22) $.48 to the cost of one gallon of diesel to pay for enough carbon
credit using char.
