Hi Richard,

I was just in a discussion on the 'terrapreta' list about how one might
audit their "carbon footprint" and then make that much charcoal per year.
It occurred to me that under the Kyoto Protocol, earned "charcoal credits"
to make charcoal for charcoal-in-soil carbon sequestration would ONLY be
paid in Non-Annex 1, developing countries. If the US signs the Kyoto
Protocol (we are an Annex 1, developed and industrialized, heavy emitter
nation), then we would only pay "carbon credits" until we stopped all fossil
carbon emissions.

So, a person in the US, who might have a "carbon footprint" of 5.5 metric
tons (~5 ton) yr-1 would pay for 5 "carbon credits" to have someone else in
a Non-Annex 1 country, on the other side of the world, earn 5 "carbon
credits" to make ~5-6 tons of charcoal.

The US really should sign the Kyoto Protocol and participate under the
current rules until 2012, like every other country on the planet. Then,
maybe the IRS could give tax deductions (or tax credits) for payment for
"carbon credits" into the Clean Development Fund. The market for biomass
carbonization technology would go to an export business.

I assembled the Pyrolysis Reactor Tower today. I had it fabricated over the
winter.

Regards,

SKB
