What source are you using that tells you that?

Are you forgetting that even if the sides of the can/barrel prevent O2 from reaching the methane ( preventing combustion ) the methane will be heated enough that it will ignite when enough O2 becomes available as it reaches the open top?

  Nonetheless, CO and H2 burn before the CH4 and CO and H2 are 10 times more prevalent in "producer gas" than is CH4.
