Thanks to Peter for his illuminating and very interesting comments. Allow me 
to add two more   >>>

[1]     Monoculture need not deplete the soil. There are cane fields which 
have harvested for hundreds of years without any apparent depletion in the soil. 
However, my gut feeling is that it usually does !

[2]     With bioenergy, there are two important variables which are often 
overlooked    >>>

[a]          We may grow energy crops on land which is not suitable for or 
which is relatively unattractive for food crops. For example, Napier gas for 
gasification on pasture land in Puerto Rico which has been underutilized or idle 
for decades.

[b]     We may increase yields and improve energy balances by managing a crop 
for energy, rather than for food. For example, with cane this can make a huge 
difference in the efficiency with which fertilizers and land are used.
