Yes, that is the basic setup, stripped of all the (locally very expensive) 
plumbing. The volatile gasses come through a single piece of pipe stuck 
through the drum on an angle pointing towards the open end of the firebox. 
Fieldstone and lime-soil mix make the enclosure. The top is a sheet of scrap 
metal. There is a tremendous amount of heat wasted and there is no control 
of the process once it has started..

Basic materials: Drum and piece of pipe, scrap metal and dirt.

Previous attemps were made with asmall discarded water heater. Could not 
find a suitable valve to control and redirect gas for other purposes.Loading 
and unloading the tank through the small hole made the operation too 
laborous.

Still looking for better answers, but as far as I know, this is 
environmentally correct and fits my area's economic circumstances at 
present.
