[Terrapreta] Iwasaki's DIY barrel charcoal maker

It's not a bad design, but I think that for the material ( thin gauge drum ) that will probably burn through fairly fast, it's a bit over developed and excessively complicated to build.

Now if one was using a section of large diam pipe ( like those that make real BBQ's prefer to use - BBQ's that will cook an entire hog or a dozen briskets at once ) with heavy walls, then the design is just about right.

  Greg,

Here's a small-scale Japanese horizontal DIY model with very extensive fabrication instructions and photos: "Iwasaki's high speed charcoal maker type IM-4SA."

It might be too dirty for your urban environment. But it is sort of hidden since it does get covered in dirt as insulation. And it might be possible to clean up the exhaust by re-routing the exhaust gases back into the firebox...?

Has anybody on the list made one of these?
