This seems to be a picture of BBQ fuel not charcoal

The writer also confuses ash with charcoal.

They are very different things.

  Are all charcoals alkaline?

In traditional Amazonian TP charcoal is also added with lots of SOM (plants,
fish shells) and pottery.
