I don't know.

The plant life in the pic's and on the show, look different when they are talking about Terra Preta ( and showing the pit ) and the Bolivian Mounds.

Like I said a short scale topographical map, marked with the sites and showing the depth of the terra preta, might shed some light on the subject.

Unfortunately that would require a complete survey and that's no likely to happen.

  actually the terrain varies a great deal. lots of the sites are along high bluffs. makes sense for people to choose non-flooding sites if they are available and there is plenty of high ground along the rivers.  i think the main region where this no-flood option is not available is in the Bolivian plain.
